Hangzhou was the capital of the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279) and has been a poet's paradise ever since. "上有天堂，下有苏杭" — "Above is heaven, below are Suzhou and Hangzhou." The reason is West Lake (西湖) — a 6.4 km² lake surrounded by temples, pagodas, gardens, and tea fields. UNESCO listed it for its cultural landscape, not just natural beauty.
It's also a tech hub — Alibaba's headquarters are here — so you get ancient charm with modern efficiency. Plan 2–3 days minimum. Add a day for a side trip to Wuzhen water town, 90 minutes north.
The most celebrated lake in China. 6.4 km², encircled by walking paths, causeways, and bridges. Best: rent a bike, ride the loop (15 km), stop at Leifeng Pagoda for sunset. The ten "Scenic Views of West Lake" are the official checklist.

Grass carp from West Lake, gently poached, then doused in a sweet-sour vinegar sauce. Delicate, the benchmark of Hangzhou cooking. Try at Zhi Wei Guan (知味观).
A whole chicken stuffed with mushrooms and lotus leaves, wrapped in lotus leaves and baked in clay. Crack the mud shell open at the table. A Hangzhou must.
Named after Su Dongpo, the 11th-century poet-official. 1.5-inch cubes of pork belly braised in soy and rice wine. Glistening, sweet, melt-in-mouth.
River shrimp stir-fried with Dragon Well tea leaves. Delicate tea aroma, very Hangzhou. A springtime specialty.
China's most famous green tea — sweet, nutty, vegetal. Buy at the village for authenticity; supermarket "Longjing" is usually not real.
Try Dingsheng Cake (rice cake), Pian Er Chuan noodles, and Song Sao Fish Soup — named after the General's widow who invented it 800 years ago.

9 lines, well-developed. ¥2–9. Covers West Lake, train station, and most attractions.
The best way to experience West Lake. Hotel bikes, public rental stations, and Hello/Meituan shared bikes all over.
DiDi works perfectly. Regular taxis ¥11 starting fare. Surge pricing minimal.
West Lake ferries (¥50–80) and gondolas (¥150+) — scenic and slow. Best at golden hour.
