Overview

Fenghuang (Phoenix) is a small town on the Tuo River in western Hunan, its wooden stilt houses and stone lanes reflected in the water, with lit bridges at night.

It's a Miao and Tujia cultural pocket, with boat rides, silver jewellery and a literary pedigree (Shen Congwen was born here).
