Overview

Nyingchi is the 'Switzerland of Tibet' — a river-valley region far greener and lower than Lhasa, famous for wild peach blossoms that blanket the hills in late March. The Yarlung Tsangpo carves one of the world's deepest canyons below Namjagbarwa, a sharp snow peak.

Because it sits at ~3,000 m (vs Lhasa's 3,650), many travellers use it to acclimatise before the plateau.

First-timer's checklist: Peach blossom season · Yarlung Tsangpo Canyon · Namjagbarwa · Basum Lake · Lulang forest · a Tibetan home-stay
