Overview

Pingyao is one of the best-preserved ancient walled cities in China — a complete Ming-era grid of grey-brick lanes, courtyard homes and watchtower gates that you can walk around on the intact city wall.

It was also the birthplace of modern Chinese banking: the Rishengchang exchange house here issued the country's first drafts, and the old financial street still feels like a 19th-century Wall Street.

First-timer's checklist: City Wall · Rishengchang · Ming-Qing Street · Zhenguo Temple · Shuanglin Temple · County Yamen
