Overview

Wutaishan in northeast Shanxi is a sacred Buddhist plateau of some 40 monasteries scattered across cool, pine-clad valleys, revered for over 1,600 years as the earthly residence of the bodhisattva Manjushri.

It's a UNESCO site and a living pilgrimage centre — monks, stupas and incense at altitude.
